Shutdown Windows with an index finger

April 21st, 2008

I have seen some other posts about this procedure, but not really a how-to, so here goes…

1. Locate your computer (using your eyes is helpful)
2. Find one of your 2 hands (you can use your feet, but it will take some practice)
3. Make a fist, then extend the index finger
4. Jab mentioned finger-extended-fist as the power button on the computer

It may take a few tries, but eventually it will turn off!

Basement office - part 2

April 5th, 2008

I repainted the walls, and it looks much better:

I left the 3 “windows” because I liked the contrasted colors, and I was afraid it was going to be too dark.
The problem is the taped edges leaked… no one told me the secret to preventing that…

So now I am trying to think of a way to create a border between them to clean up that edge.

Suggestions welcome!

And yes, the fluorescent light above the tile in the third picture is making the lighter paint appear green. Now I need to replace that light too.

Protect your blood brain barrier

April 3rd, 2008

There are a lot of reasons to like the “blood brain barrier

  • It’s a filter for your brain
  • It has blood in its name
  • It has brain in its name
  • 3 b words in a row

For some reason, I always pick up on stories about this biological strainer and they are usually good news.

Check out this BBC article about good ol’ BBB: Daily caffeine ‘protects brain’

Wait a minute…

studies have shown that high levels of cholesterol in the blood can make this barrier “leaky”

!!! Yikes !!!

Good thing I’m a vegetarian…

Basement office - part I

March 19th, 2008

So here are some after pictures… I always forget to take some before I get started.

Tile floor:

This turned out really nice. The accent and 12″ porcelain tiles where from Home Depot.

Epoxy floor.

I used Rust-Oleum basement Epoxy with a tintable base. This is Khaki.

Then the floor was covered with 2 coats of arcylic sealer. It turned out pretty good, but I should have sealed the cracks. They didn’t fill in as much as I had hoped. New wall paint is on my list…

If you have any ideas on what to put in the recessed hole, I’m open to suggestions. So far we have: bookcase, aquarium, monitors/TV.

3/4 shot of part of the ceiling:

Note the ceiling cutout in the corner. The drop ceiling would have made the last step too low, so we dry walled the ceiling and boxed in the corner. Thanks Jon!

Pipe:

And here are the pipes I want to use for the desktop supports. Some are cleaned and some aren’t yet…

Django - just starting

September 20th, 2007

I decided it was time to learn some Python (it’s showing up everywhere I look!). So after looking at a lot of different web frameworks, I started trying Django. Their template system seems to fit the way I like to do things which has been strangely rare in most frameworks.

Anyway, this line from the Django book proved to me I was on the right track:

Pretty URLs are a sign of a quality Web application
